Alan is an internationally recognised, experienced RIBA chartered architect and client design advisor. As the Founding Director of Nex—, he leads the design of all projects to ensure that quality and innovation are rigorously aligned to clients’ ambitions.
Trained at Trinity College, Dublin, and the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), his eclectic design and research career has spanned many sectors, countries and companies. He has led the design and delivery of projects ranging from £100k to £40 million in value, covering infrastructure, retail, residential, commercial and public buildings in the UK and Europe.
With a focus on applied research, he has always embraced collaboration and innovation. Indeed, interdisciplinary collaboration is one of the studio’s founding principles. It informs the way the practice engages with clients, contractors and design team partners.
Alan’s work has been recognised with awards and commendations from many quarters: the D&AD, The Architects Journal, UK Technology Strategy Board, World Architecture Network, Building Design, and the Architecture Foundation.
His other passion is teaching and learning. His studies have taken him from Dublin to the Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá, and onto the Architectural Association in London. He taught at the Architectural Association from 2005-2014 in multiple roles, including Director of the Independents Group, Director of the FAB Research Cluster, and Unit tutor.
As a critic, published author, regular public speaker, he continues to push and redefine the role of architecture and its cultural impact.
