Engaging with typology. This project explores the link between local vernacular and contemporary user requirements.
Situated on a hill on the west coast of Ireland, Binary House called for careful assessment and site study. Rather than demolishing a small existing house on site, many opportunities were explored to uncover if refurbishment was an option.
The main volume of the house is emptied and refurbished for use as the living space, while a second adjacent volume is created containing all bedroom and service accommodation. The two houses are connected on the ground floor by a green roofed space that contains the kitchen, dining spaces and a terrace. The relationship between the discrete volumes is intended to integrate the building into the landscape and create a distinct coastal silhouette on the horizon.
