This project involved the complete refurbishment and extension of a Grade II Listed Victorian terrace house in central Dublin. Careful conservation analysis of the building condition and internal arrangements allowed us to make dramatic alterations to the existing fabric, which enhanced the best features of the existing structure and created new contemporary space to the rear.
Our aim was to explore a late Victorian raised ground housing typology in relation to contemporary lifestyle requirements, specifically through the investigation of the relationship between the lower and upper ground floors. The main stairwell and associated return levels were significantly altered to more closely connect the two floors, while walls at first floor level were reconfigured to pull daylight deep into the lower ground floor through the roof.
At the rear, the existing return was demolished and replaced with a new dining room on the lower ground floor and an additional bedroom above. The new bedroom, wrapped in bronze, appears to float above the concrete volume of the dining room, to allow changing patterns of sunlight into the interior.RELATED LINKS:
