Designing Fabrication is an exhibition that presents the work of the AA|FAB Research Initiative - a two year research programme that was set up at the AA to facilitate new research into emerging digital design and fabrication processes. The aim of the initiative was to act as an agency to foster interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration between members of the school community and outside participants who share a common interest in the application of novel digital design and production tools within architecture. The show presented the work of twenty four emerging architects from all over the world through drawings, images, models and full scale prototypes, and included eight award winning projects from the research programme.
Located in a former industrial warehouse in Shoreditch during the 2009 London Design Festival, the exhibition design employed a sequence of bespoke light weight timber frame units suspended from the roof in sequence through the space. These units performed as a display armature for the graphic panels and were designed so that the paper was lightly tensioned when the unit was hung. As the sequence of units progressed through the space, the location of the notch joint on each frame is shifted to create a geometric transformation of the assembly and a progressive alteration of the viewing angle of the graphic panels. A similar timber frame system was used for trestle tabletops to display physical models.RELATED LINKS: NEX at Parametric Prototypes AA|FAB Exhibition opens AA|FAB Exhibition at the LDF
