The Dodder Bridge was won through an open international design competition. It is being developed as part of a community gain package for a developer led regeneration of a significant site near the city centre and when in place it will complete the revitalisation of the pedestrian network in the area.
The concept of the bridge is to create a hybrid of infrastructure and public amenity by configuring the 30m span to provide a new space for pedestrians to pause and enjoy the views of the river. The structural design takes the constraints imposed by river channel flood clearance and uses it as an opportunity to create an extended seating area by allowing the main central spine to pass above the deck on the lower south side.
The structure is fabricated from rolled steel plate and painted a vibrant light blue. The central spine and two edge beams frame an open soffit of thin stiffener plates which register the changing sectional profile across the span. The railings are fabricated from a stainless steel handrail and thin steel cables to maximize transparency through the structure.RELATED LINKS:
