The Creative Commons at the Calls will be a vibrant new hybrid space in the centre of Leeds that aims to attract the most innovative and renowned designers, designer makers, galleries, bars and restaurants in the Yorkshire & Humber region and become a beacon urban development to the wider UK.
The proposal is a mixed use development of live-work units, retail design studios and specialist shops sandwiched between a ‘Commons Gallery’ and bar-cafe on the ground floor, and a rooftop restaurant overlooking the canal.
The Commons Gallery is a commercial retail space open to the public during the day that will feature a changing selection of work from resident designers and makers. It occupies the ground floor and is visually and spatially connected to the units above through a dramatic vertical atrium and spiral staircase. It will serve as a window to the world, showcasing the range and quality of work being produced within, and act like an urban magnet to attract the public up into the building. Visitors will be able to purchase unique products across a range of disciplines including fashion, jewellery, textiles, fine art, ceramics + glassware, and furniture. The space is flexible enough to be used for other social events in the evenings and can have controlled access to the bar along the canal.
As visitors move up through the building via the staircase or lift they can access more specialised retail outlets along the west side on each level while also glimpsing designers at work in their units through internal windows, On reaching the top floor restaurant they are offered fantastic views over the city. A high level bridge connects the new building to the main circulation area of the Calls Landing offices.RELATED LINKS:
