The installation was designed in collaboration with Established & Sons for their fifth show at the annual Milan Fair. The design makes use of thousands of randomly sized Tulipwood boards which were supplied by the American Hardwood Export Council. Individual boards have been woven onto structural panels to define routes and form a sequence of spaces that creates a compact sense of density and an intensity of occupation.
At the small scale the design strategy is flexible enough to accommodate the randomness of the material, while at the macro scale the spaces have a greater degree of coherence in their relation through plan and elevation. The rawness and immediacy of the design is intended to contrast with the refinement of the furniture pieces it encloses.
The completed installation is a cityscape in micro scale, with vertiginous lanes, intimate enclosed spaces, vistas and corridors with distant glimpses of furniture through overlapping layers of enclosure. Here, the furniture collection can only be discovered through exploration. After the show is dismantled, the Tulipwood boards will be recycled into a new furniture collection.RELATED LINKS: Pelota Installation Video
